Statement lips and heavy eye make-up 'don't mix'

When it comes to make-up, one beauty trend per look is best for creating a fashionable yet understated effect, experts say.

Professional makeup artist Amy Boyd explained that if opting for full eye makeup or a strong lip colour, other features should remain natural. For example, nude lips go well with heavy eyes.

The smokey eye remains a hot look for the current season, as seen on celebrities such as Beyonce, Rihanna and Keira Knightley.

Ms Boyd advised: "The key with the smokey eye is not to go beyond the edge of the eye - it's to do a circle around the eye, because it is either a cat look or a smokey look, you can't mix them.

"Brushes are important; you can't do everything with your fingers. You need a nice blending brush to get the edge and ever so slightly underneath so it makes that circle."

This year, sales of fake eyelashes have increased by 50 per cent, while the popularity of fake tan has risen by more than a quarter, according to Asda.
