Hair straighteners introduced to Scottish schools

17 September 2009
Three schools in Scotland have introduced hair staighteners in a bid to get girls to participate in physical education lessons.

St Peter the Apostle, Clydebank High and Vale of Leven Academy have all put in straighteners as many girls were reportedly complaining that they had bad hair after they had taken part in lessons.

A spokesperson for West Dunbartonshire Council said that two sets had been installed in each of the three schools.

"The council considers the views of pupils to be critical in ensuring that the school environment is as positive and inclusive as possible," she said.

The spokesperson added that the straighteners were included to reverse the trend of girls not participating in physical exercise.

It cost less than £1,000 to install the equipment in the three schools.

Although straight hair has been popular in recent years, many celebrities are now trying alternative looks, such as Kelly Brook, who is often seen with wavy hair.
